Many people are afraid of leaving home because of crime. Some believe that more action should be taken to prevent crime, while others feel that little can be done. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Today, crime rate has shown an upward trend.  In the meantime, some people have argued that the government should take action in combating crime, but others claim that there is nothing to do to decrease the crime rate.  In this essay, I will analyse both sides of view, and give my personal opinions in the end.

People who believe the government should take action to prevent crime have their reasons.  First of all, heavy penalties may frighten those potential criminals to avoid committing crimes.  Specifically, potential criminals who are rational enough will stop their act at the thought because they might pay for it greatly which outweigh the possible benefit they may acquire.  Secondly, if the press could broadcast some criminal behaviors to the public, it will prevent more people to get rid of being harmed.  For instance, many signs are marked beside the ATM machine to notice citizens that they need to be caution with criminals.

On the other hand, other people have given their opinion to explain why there is nothing to do to prevent crimes.  Most importantly, crime rate always implies the economic situation in a region.  Specifically, the distribution of wealth, and the gap between richness and poorness would lead high crime rate.  Therefore, the government needs to solve the economic problem at first.

To conclude, economic situation has been considered as the most important reason which has caused the high crime rate.  Therefore, only if the government takes actions to solve the money problem, the crime rate could be decreased.
