用happen,能引出一个片段,展开某事件进展的细节,作为文章要提供的事实和证据。按照英文习惯,既然是提供证据,就不能随便用probably这类评价真实程度的修饰语。也就是说,happen已指明事件是真实的,与probably自相矛盾。在逻辑结构上英语比汉语要严谨(当然英语也shaky,有个德国朋友这么说过),汉语容许这类自相矛盾并不能成为英语写作的证据。
如果把I so happened换成I beleive类,那么跟在其后的that从句属于命题(或建议)类,这时再用probably修饰就是妥当的啦。
改造一下1楼的句子。例如,[a complement]替代[which is the one],看看顺眼否:
The adverb probably cannot be added to the complement in the intended reading, a complement in which it has scope over the Episode as a whole.
不过,改造后的句子的强调力度不如原来。
