Royal Wedding: planned road closures in central London for April 29

A large swathe of central London will be closed to road traffic for 19 hours on 29 April for the

Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to gather for the occasion, with 200,000 anticipated to gather in Hyde Park alone, where the event will be shown live on giant TV screens, and further tens of thousands lining the route of the wedding procession. The procession will pass from Buckingham Palace, via The Mall, down Whitehall, to Westminster Abbey. The couple will return by the same route.

Roads between Lambeth Bridge and Waterloo Bridge to the south and as far north as Piccadilly and the Strand will be closed from 4am, and police hope to have roads re-opened by 11pm. Depending on crowds and the time taken to remove security barriers, that time may be revised.

If crowds are larger than expected, contingency plans have been put in place to close roads further west to Vauxhall Bridge, and north to Piccadilly Circus, as well as closing Knightsbridge east of Knightsbridge Station and Edgware Road up to the junction with Marylebone Road.

These measures are intended to allow the crowd to disperse safely.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has said that all Tube services will operate as normal throughout the day. Aslef, the train drivers' union, has ruled out a Tube strike on the day of the wedding, despite Steve Grant - the union's London negotiating officer - suggesting that industrial action was a possibility.
