Olympic hopefuls given medal target

British Olympic sport stars must win between 30 and 61 World Championship medals this year to keep them on track for London 2012 Games success, it has been announced.
The target set by UK Sport, the elite sports agency, covers performances at this year's World Championships which will be a major test ahead of London 2012.
British Paralympians, who won 42 golds in Beijing 2008 to gain second place in the medal table for the third successive Paralympic Games, have a target of winning 34-52 World Championship medals.
More medals across more sports are being targeted than were won in the year before Beijing 2008 as a result of the positive impact of funding, according to UK Sport.
In 2007, 42 medals were won in Olympic disciplines at World Championships.
Changes to the Paralympic competition schedules means that direct comparisons but 37 medals were won at Paralympic World Championships in the same year.
There are 19 Olympic sports with World Championships this year. Nine Paralympic sports will be competing at World Championships in 2011, with others focusing on European Championships or equivalent international competitions.
Team GB won 19 golds to finish fourth in the 2008 Olympic medal table with a haul of 47 medals - their best performance since the London Games of 1908.
UK Sport is investing over £100 million a year in the four years to London of National Lottery, Government Exchequer and private income from Team 2012, presented by Visa, in Britain's Olympic and Paralympic sports.
UK Sport agrees medal target ranges with these sports as part of their funding agreement and to monitor international progress towards London 2012.
